Create a Beautiful Smile

If you have missing teeth, you can correct the appearance of your smile with the placement of dentures. Dentist, Deborah Ruddell, D.D.S., P.A. can fit your mouth for dentures and order customized dentures that are made just for you. Dentures are removable dental prosthetics that are used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. They are specifically designed and engineered to resemble your natural teeth and they may even enhance your smile.

Two Types of Dentures

There are two different types of dentures which are complete as well as partial dentures. Complete dentures are placed when a patient has all of their teeth missing. Partial dentures are placed when there are still some natural teeth remaining. A partial denture is able to fill the spaces left by the missing teeth and also serves to help avoid the natural teeth shifting out of position. Complete dentures may be immediate dentures or conventional dentures. A conventional denture is made once the teeth have been removed and all of the surrounding gum tissue has healed.

Dentures are very sturdy and dependable, however, they may have to be repaired or replaced over time due to normal wear and tear. Call (239) 936-8616 to schedule an appointment.

Take Control of Your Smile

A denture is a removable dental appliance replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile.

There are two types of dentures - complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A Partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting. A complete denture may be either “conventional” or “immediate.” A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, usually taking 4 to 6 weeks. During this time the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made.

Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.

Reasons for Dentures

  • Complete denture - Loss of all teeth in an arch
  • Partial denture - Loss of several teeth in an arch
  • Enhancing smile and facial tissues
  • Improving chewing, speech, and digestion

Like your teeth, your dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. Brushing also can help keep the teeth from staining.

Types of Dentures

Conventional. This full removable denture is made and placed in your mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed, which may take several months.

Immediate. This removable denture is inserted on the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. Your dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw during a preliminary visit. You don’t have to be without teeth during the healing period, but may need to have the denture relined or remade after your jaw has healed.

Overdenture. Sometimes some of your teeth can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Implants can serve the same function, too.

When you’re not wearing your dentures, put them in a safe place covered in water to keep them from warping.

What Does Getting Dentures Involve?

The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.

It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty, however, this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.

You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures. Dentures do get damaged occasionally. If you ever need a denture repair in Ft Myers, FL, we’re here to help.
